HOW
TO USE THE RIGHT LANE & AVOID OVER TAKING
INTRODUCTION
Before
a vehicle driver intends to change his lane on the road he must have learnt
maneuvering depends on some applications in changing destination and speed
which he may need to alter course or lane.
Changing
the lane while driving on the road is a serious reason for accidents when
the driver under-estimated or failed to inform other drivers of his intention
or in attempting to change to next lane.

Keep
to the right-hand lane, except when road signs or markings indicate otherwise.
on a three-lane dual carriage way it is classified as follows :
- The right-hand lane is for driving straight
ahead within road speed limits or to turn right before reaching an intersection.
- The middle lane is for overtaking the vehicles moving
in the right hand lane and/or to go straight ahead at intersections.
- The left hand lane is for overtaking within road speed
limits or to turn left.
LINE
& LANES ALONG THE ROAD

A sub-broken line with long markings and short gaps
is a hazard warning line. It tells drivers not to overtake unless the
road ahead is clear.
An unbroken white line tells drivers not to over take
or cross unless when getting in or cross unless when getting in or out
of a building or a side road. This kind of lines is found on one-way
roads.
A short broken white line which divides the road into
lanes tells drivers to keep to the right -hand lane except when over
taking or turning left.

Changing
the lane is like overtaking, by which drivers are not allowed to do it
if there are traffic signs and markings indicated so.
To
change the lane properly and safely driver must do the following:
- He must give a signal to other drivers
indicating that he intends to change his lane.
- He must wait. Giving other drivers enough time to see
his signal.
- He must make sure that the road ahead is clear &
safe to overtake before changing that lane.
- After changing the lane he should drive with the same
speed of other vehicles as possible using all mirrors.
OVER
TAKING
When Overtaking Drivers must know the followings:
- Estimate the number of cars which should be overtaken
and its speeds
- The speed and the performance of the chisel he is driving.
- Estimate within the range of visibility the speed of
vehicles coming from the opposite direction.
- The possible height speed of approaching vehicles as
yet unseen.
- Distance available for overtaking and back to right-hand
lane as soon as possible.
- Inform the driver in front with your intention to overtake.
BEFORE
OVERTAKING
- He must now enforce the vehicle been overtaken or the
approaching vehicle to alter course of speed.
- Avoid making a third line of vehicles abreast, either
traveling in the same or opposite direction.
- Make sure that the driver of the vehicle behind him
is not overtaking or has given a signal in tending to overtake.
- Make sure that the driver in front is not giving a signal
intending to overtake.
- He must give a signal to the other drivers that he intends
overtake at the right time.
- He must leave a safe distance between his vehicle and
the vehicles he is going to overtake.
HOW
TO CHANGE YOUR LINE SAFELY
- Look through mirrors, and give signal clearly.
- Look through mirrors and give signal, then come to the
lane.

HOW
TO OVERTAKE
-
First, give a signal to show other drivers that you
are going to overtake, using signal
lights, a horn.
- Make sure that the driver behind you has got your message
by looking through your mirrors.
- If you start overtaking, drive fast enough to pass it
in a short time leave a safe distance between your vehicle and his before,
while and after overtaking.
- After you overtake get back to your right-hand unless
you have to overtake another vehicle without making trouble to the vehicles
behind.
- The driver of the vehicle begin overtaken should drive
on the maximum right-hand side as he can & reduce car speed too.
Remember the golden rules which says L if you have a
doubt don't overtake.
- Arrow lane marking syndicate the correct lane to be
taken before reaching intersections or round about.
DON'T
OVERTAKE IT
- The visibility range is not enough to see the road ahead
clearly.
- The car in front moves in the maximum road speed limits.
- The traffic against you do not allow you to make it
safely or endangers other road users.
- You are driving on flyovers, or at intersections.
- The cars in front are stopping because of a congested
traffic or else.
- You are driving on turns, curves, sloppy roads, slippery
roads, at intersections, round about, and traffic pedestrian lines.
- In places where overtaking is prohibited by road traffic
signs or traffic police man's orders.

OVERTAKE
ON THE RIGHT-HAND ONLY IF
The driver in front has given you a signal to turn left.
- You want to turn right at intersection.
- While traffic moving, you can drive to
right-hand lane either to turn right or stop.
